WASHINGTON — A record number of Indian-American candidates are on ballots this midterm cycle, running for Congress, state legislatures, and local offices across Texas, California, New Jersey, and beyond — a milestone for a community whose political footprint keeps growing.

In Texas, several desi candidates are contesting state house and congressional seats in districts with fast-growing South Asian populations. Campaign strategists say the community's rising voter registration numbers — driven by naturalization and youth turnout — are turning heads in both parties.

California remains the deepest bench, with Indian-American incumbents defending seats and newcomers challenging in competitive districts. New Jersey, home to one of the densest Indian-American populations in the country, has its own slate of candidates for state and county offices.

What is driving the surge? Community organizers point to a pipeline effect: years of civic engagement through temples, cultural associations, and advocacy groups are now producing candidates. Fundraising networks within the community have also matured, giving first-time candidates a real shot.

Win or lose, the trend matters. Representation shapes policy — from immigration to small-business issues — and every cycle with more desi names on the ballot normalizes the idea for the next generation. As one young volunteer put it: "You cannot be what you cannot see. Now we can see it."
