Congressmen Ami Bera (D-CA) and Suhas Subramanyam (D-VA) led a sharp bipartisan backlash in Washington against President Trump's Oct 16 executive order waiving the 100% duties on top buyers of Russian oil and gas — including India — under the Lindsey Graham sanctions law.
Bera said Trump's decision "should leave no doubt" that he is siding with Russia; Subramanyam called it "undermining Congress' authority, abandoning Ukraine, and letting Putin off the hook." Even Republican Sen. John Cornyn of Texas — a founder of the Senate India Caucus — joined the criticism: "Lindsey would be appalled."
Meanwhile, the diaspora group FIIDS thanked Trump for a "pragmatic pause" on oil tariffs, saying affordable energy and diplomacy must remain priorities with winter approaching.
